Hyper Drill

The Hyper Drill, also known as Drill Lance in EBF4, is an Earth-elemental sword available for Matt in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. In EBF4, it is exclusive to the Steam release of the game and the Premium Pack.

Description

The Drill Lance has a black shaft with a small adornment near the base. It has a large black cylinder for a head, with three grey spikes on both sides and a long silver drill on the tip. When it returned for EBF5 as the Hyper Drill, its head was slightly slimmer and the thread on the drill was made much narrower, giving the entire weapon a sleeker appearance.

In both of its appearances so far, the Hyper Drill has emphasized physical Earth damage to the exclusion of nearly everything else. It both empowers and resists Earth damage while having good to great Attack and additional effects to increase Matt's damage output, but it tends to have few (if any) other stat boosts and a weakness to Thunder damage.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Drill Lance has the third highest Attack boost of all EBF4 swords, tying with the Sapphire Giant and beaten only by the Equilibrium and Anarchy. It can inflict Stagger with weapon-elemental attacks, thus setting the target up for even more damage (sometimes from the Drill Lance itself). It makes ample use of its elemental boost: besides strengthening Matt's natural Earth skills, its two bonus skills — a Quake counter and a Rock Fall unleash — are both Earth-elemental and purely damage-focused. On the other hand, it lacks any other stats and is available very late into the game; additionally, its elemental weakness is fairly common.

The Drill Lance raises Matt's Earth resistance (to a maximum of 50% at Level 5), but makes him more vulnerable to Thunder (which remains at -30% no matter what its level is).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Normal

The Hyper Drill has impressive Attack, a small Defence boost, and the ability to power up Matt's Earth skills. Its Weapon-elemental skills can inflict Heavy and debuff Defence while having a chance to unleash Stalactites for decent Earth-based damage and a chance to Stagger foes; at maximum level, these skills also let Matt ignore the defensive buffs of his targets.

Compared to The Chopper, the Hyper Drill has more Attack power and overall damage output in exchange for less bulk and resistances. It's also available even later than the competition, although it can still find places to apply its Earth-based power (particularly against the Blaze Hydra).

The Hyper Drill resists Earth and is weak to Thunder. The resistance doesn't become an immunity at Level 5, but the weakness remains constant no matter how much the sword is forged.

Equip Remix

Overwhelm your enemies with the raw fighting spirit of the Alt Hyper Drill, a fearsome "sword" with great Attack, decent HP, and good defenses for the price of minor losses to Accuracy and Evade. It enhances Matt's debuffing skills and Earth attacks, occasionally casts Rockslide between turns, and debuffs enemy Attack with Weapon-elemental skills (which benefits from its debuff boost) in addition to unleashing Giga Drill with some regularity.

Among Earth-boosting swords, the Alt Hyper Drill's stats are completely superior to the Alt Emerald Smasher aside from the relatively unimportant Magic Attack; on the other hand, its unleash is more situational than Cataclysm and it lacks a status resistance. It's also stronger and more durable than the Alt Lightning Shard, but it has Accuracy/Evade penalties while lacking a second elemental boost and the useful chance of automatic Haste. As a debuffing weapon, it can be considered the offensive counterpart of the Alt Club of Withering, with much better power, a little bulk, and the ability to turn Slicing Cyclone into a 1 CD Screamer instead of Debilitate. Its Giga Drill unleash can punish foes that buff their defenses, but its inability to actually remove said buffs means that Dispel support remains more effective overall.

The Alt Hyper Drill resists Earth and Bomb, with neither becoming an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Drill Lance is found at the summit of Battle Mountain, in one of two chests at the bottom-left corner of the shops screen. The chest is accessible after defeating all four Dark Players; Winged Boots are required to get this far.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Hyper Drill is found inside a chest in The Rapture, one screen west of the Slime Cat. The chest is accessible while solving the Teleporter Maze on the same screen; it's also guarded by a battle that appears as a Ruby Ore.

Trivia

  • The Hyper Drill is one of many references to the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann anime found throughout the EBF franchise ("Yours is the Drill that will Pierce the Heavens!!!"), being based on the drill-tipped staff Simon carries in the epilogue.
  • In EBF4, Dark Matt begins wielding the Drill Lance once he passes a certain HP threshold.
